The One Thing Most People Forget to Buy

Most people already have a marker pen or a roll of tape somewhere in the house. A tape measure is the one that catches people out. This one has a 19mm blade that extends to 5 metres, a locking mechanism so it holds its reading, and a rubberised grip you can hold one handed while you’re crouched down by a sofa or a door frame.

Why Bother Measuring Before Moving Day

It’s easy to assume a sofa or a wardrobe will fit through a door because it fit through the last one. Measure the doorways, the hallway width and any awkward stair turns before moving day rather than on the day itself, and you’ll know in advance whether something needs to come apart first or go out through a window. It takes five minutes, and it saves you finding out with a wardrobe wedged in a stairwell and a van waiting outside.

Boxes are the same. If you’re working out how many will fit in a room or in the back of a car, a quick measure against our box sizes tells you before you start packing rather than halfway through.

If You’re Storing as Well as Moving

If some of what you’re measuring up is heading into storage rather than straight to a new address, that’s what we do too. We collect it, look after it, and bring it back when you want it. Get an instant quote to see what that would cost alongside your move.

Delivery

Order before 1pm, Monday to Friday, and it arrives the next working day.

FAQ

Do I really need a tape measure for a house move?

It’s an easy one to skip, but it’s the quickest way to check a sofa, wardrobe or bed frame will actually get through a doorway or round a stair turn. Five minutes with a tape measure beats finding out with the item stuck halfway through a door.

Is 5 metres enough for most furniture and doorways?

Yes. For doorways, hallways, furniture and boxes, 5 metres covers almost everything you’ll need to measure at home. It’s a household tape measure rather than a site one, so it’s built for exactly this sort of job.

120 colour-coded moving labels, ten each of twelve designs covering every room in the house. Stick one on each box as you pack, whether it's heading straight to your new address or into storage for a while, and you'll know what's inside and where it's going without opening a single one.

Labels That Actually Tell You What’s Inside

A box with nothing on it is a box you have to open to identify. Each label here is colour-coded and room-specific, so one glance tells you and anyone helping you carry boxes exactly where it belongs, whether that’s a straight run into the new place or a spell in storage first.

The 12 Room Designs

120 labels in total, ten of each of these twelve designs:

Dining Room

Living Room

Bedroom 1

Bedroom 2

Bedroom 3

Bedroom 4

Bedroom 5

Bathroom

Storage

Kitchen

Utility

Fragile

Five bedroom designs cover most houses without you having to double up or improvise, and the Storage and Fragile designs are there for anything that doesn’t fit a room label.

How to Colour-Code Your Move

Colour-coding only works if it tells you something a plain “Kitchen” label doesn’t. Most people have opened a box marked “Kitchen” and found a lamp, a stack of books and half a drawer of cutlery, because it got filled with whatever was nearby when the tape ran out.

A few small habits fix that:

Label by destination room, not by the room you packed it in. A box of spare bedding that started in the hallway cupboard still gets a bedroom label, because that’s where it’s going, not where it came from.

Add a number to each box as well as the colour. A simple running list, even just “12, kitchen, mugs and pans”, turns a pile of boxes into something you can actually search.

Give a handful of boxes a “must open first” mark. Kettle, chargers, medication, the first night’s bedding. Keep those separate from the general pile and your first evening in the new place doesn’t start with a box hunt.

Do all three and the system still makes sense a week later, not just on packing day.

If You’re Storing as Well as Moving

If some of what you’re packing is heading into storage rather than straight to a new address, that’s what we do. We collect it, look after it, and bring it back when you’re ready. Room labels are worth using here too, because a box that says “Bedroom 3” or “Storage” tells you a lot more when it comes back than a plain one does. Get an instant quote to see what that would cost alongside your move.

Delivery

Order before 1pm, Monday to Friday, and it arrives the next working day.

FAQ

Will 120 labels be enough for my move?

For most house moves, yes. With five bedroom designs plus the main living spaces, most homes are covered without reusing a design for two different rooms. If yours is a bigger move, order more than one kit.

Can I use these for boxes going into storage as well as boxes I’m keeping with me?

Yes. The Storage design is there for exactly that. A room label on a storage box means you’ll know roughly what’s inside when you request it back, and it comes back to you as the whole box rather than individual items pulled out of it.

Do the labels stick well to a double walled box?

They’re made for standard cardboard moving boxes, including our double walled ones. Press them onto a clean, dry patch of the box for the best hold.

A Pair of Scissors That Won’t Wreck Your Hands

Packing day usually starts with a rummage through the kitchen drawer for a pair of scissors that went blunt years ago. These are stainless steel, so they keep their edge through tape, bubble wrap and thick packaging instead of chewing at it. The blue comfort-grip handles help as well, and you can work with them for an hour without your hand seizing up. There’s a safety lock too, so they stay shut when they’re sitting in a box of packing supplies.

Buying Alongside Tape and Bubble Wrap

These are the sort of thing you reach for while you’re taping up boxes or wrapping something fragile, so they’re worth adding to your basket next to our brown parcel tape and bubble wrap rather than ordering on their own. If you’re already getting one of our kits, like The Fully Loaded, The Mover Kit or The Value Pack, a pair of these covers the odd job a kit doesn’t.

If You’re Storing as Well as Moving

If some of what you’re packing is heading into storage rather than straight to a new address, that’s what we do too.

Delivery

Order before 1pm, Monday to Friday, and it arrives the next working day.

FAQ

What’s the safety lock for?

It keeps the blades closed when you’re not using them, so they don’t open up loose in a drawer, a bag or a box of packing supplies.

Are these better than a normal pair of household scissors?

For packing, yes. Stainless steel blades hold their edge through tape and thick cardboard for longer than a general purpose pair, and the comfort-grip handles make a real difference if you’re using them on and off all day.

Do I need scissors as well as a utility knife?

It depends how you like to work. Scissors are easier on bubble wrap and thinner packaging, while a knife is better for cutting boxes down. Plenty of people pack with both to hand.

A blue utility knife with an 18mm snap-off blade, a non-slip ridged grip and a sliding blade lock. Handy for taping up boxes before a move, and just as handy for slitting them open again once they're back from storage.

The post Utility Knife appeared first on Jam Storage.

A Proper Knife for the Job

The 18mm blade cuts through tape and card cleanly, the blue body is easy to spot in a pile of packing supplies, and the ridged grip holds steady in your hand even when it’s picked up a bit of tape residue.

Safer Than What You’d Normally Reach For

The sliding blade lock is why it’s worth having one of these rather than grabbing whatever’s nearest. Lock the blade in place mid-cut and it stays where you put it, so it won’t slide back into the handle while you’re working. A kitchen knife or a pair of scissors can’t do that.

A Snap-Off Blade Means It’s Always Sharp

The blade comes in sections. When the tip goes blunt from all that tape and card, snap that section away and there’s a fresh edge underneath, so there’s nothing to sharpen and no new blade to buy. Useful on a move that drags on for weeks, and useful again months later when the same boxes come back from storage and need opening.

If You’re Storing as Well as Moving

If some of what you’re packing is heading into storage rather than straight to a new address, that’s what we do too.

Delivery

Order before 1pm, Monday to Friday, and it arrives the next working day.

FAQ

Is this safer than using a kitchen knife to unpack boxes?

Yes. The sliding lock holds the blade in place while you cut, so it can’t fold back into the handle halfway through the way an unlocked kitchen knife or a pair of scissors can catch you out.

What happens when the blade goes blunt?

Snap that section off and you’ve got a sharp edge underneath. Nothing to sharpen, and no need to buy a whole new knife.

Can I use this to open boxes coming back from storage, not just for packing?

Yes. It’s the same job either way, cutting through tape and card, so it’s just as useful when your boxes come back as it was when you sent them off.

A pack of 20 permanent marker pens, quick drying and water resistant, so what you write on a box today still reads clearly next week. It works whether the box is heading to your new place or into storage for a while. Pairs well with our Moving Labels Kit if you'd rather colour code as well as write by hand.

The post Marker Pen appeared first on Jam Storage.

Twenty Pens, So There’s Always One to Hand

Packing eats marker pens. One goes missing under a pile of newspaper, one runs out halfway through the kitchen, and nobody can find a working pen when the tape’s already on the last box. A pack of 20 means there’s one within reach whoever’s doing the packing and whichever room you’re in.

The ink is quick drying, so you’re not standing over a wet label waiting before you can stack the next box on top. It’s water resistant too. Boxes sit on doorsteps, ride in the back of a van, and end up in whichever room has become the sort it later pile, so a bit of damp is fairly normal. Water resistant ink means what you wrote still reads properly afterwards.

Why “Kitchen” Isn’t Much of a Label

A box labelled just “Kitchen” tends to hold kitchen things, a couple of bathroom bits and, somehow, a lamp. Writing the room is a start, but the second line does the real work. Note what’s actually inside, or mark the boxes you’ll want to open first. It takes a few seconds and saves you opening six identical boxes looking for the kettle.

If you’d rather not rely on handwriting alone, our Moving Labels Kit gives you room stickers to use with these pens. You can colour code by room and still write the detail that makes a box easy to find later.

If You’re Storing as Well as Moving

If some of what you’re labelling is heading into storage rather than straight to a new address, that’s what we do too.

Delivery

Order before 1pm, Monday to Friday, and it arrives the next working day.

FAQ

Why does the pack come with 20 pens?

Packing gets through pens faster than you’d think, and it’s rarely one person doing all the writing. Twenty means you can hand a pen to whoever’s helping without hunting for a spare.

Will the ink smudge or run?

It’s quick drying, so it won’t smear as soon as you write it, and water resistant, so a bit of damp on a box won’t turn your labelling into a guessing game.

Can I use these with the Moving Labels Kit?

Yes. The pens work well alongside the labels if you want to colour code by room and still add your own detail underneath.
