Storing a 4-bed house for 6 months while renovating a new home in Hemel Hempstead
Charlotte and Neil had sold their four-bedroom house and bought another that wasn’t liveable yet. We stored everything while the main works were done, then delivered it back in phases, as each part of the new home was ready.

The situation
A new house that wasn’t liveable yet
Charlotte and Neil usually renovate their homes while living in them. This time was different. They’d sold their four-bedroom house and bought another four-bedroom house in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, just outside London, that needed so much work it wasn’t liveable. The whole house was being renovated, and a new outbuilding was going up in the garden.
Rather than move in and live on a building site, they decided to put everything into storage for six months while the fundamental works were done. In Charlotte’s words, they were “apprehensive about using storage”, and with a house sale and building work to line up, their dates had a few complications along the way.

Charlotte and Neil didn’t need everything back on the same day. The outbuilding in the garden was finished first, so they moved into it while the work on the house carried on.
As soon as the outbuilding was ready, we delivered their essentials from storage. The rest stayed safely with us and came back in phases, whenever they were ready for the next lot.

Is there a company that will collect and store my furniture while I renovate?
Yes. JamStorage collects your furniture and belongings from your home, stores them at our depot while the work is done, and delivers them back when you’re ready, all at once or in stages. Every item is photographed for your online inventory.
How does storage with collection work during a renovation?
Book online or by phone and choose a morning, midday or afternoon collection slot. Our crew wraps and loads everything and stores it in sealed Jam Pods. When rooms are ready, you request items back and we deliver them.
What happens if my renovation runs over?
You simply keep storing. After the 4-week minimum you pay week by week, so an overrun doesn’t mean a new contract, and we rearrange delivery to suit your new dates.
Do you cover Hemel Hempstead and Hertfordshire?
Yes. We collect from every London borough and from nearby towns in Hertfordshire, including Hemel Hempstead, Monday to Saturday.
How long can I store during a renovation?
The minimum is 4 weeks. After that you can store for as long as the work takes.
How much storage space does a 4-bed house need?
Usually around 150 sq ft. That’s what Charlotte and Neil used for the contents of their four-bedroom house. Our space calculator gives you a more exact figure.
Where can I store my furniture while my new house is renovated?
With storage with collection, we collect from your old home, store everything at our depot and deliver it to your new home when it’s ready. You don’t need a van or a storage unit near the new house.
Can you deliver my things back in stages?
Yes. You can have your essentials first and the rest later, as rooms or buildings are finished. Each delivery is booked when you need it.
Can you deliver to a different address?
Yes. We can collect from your old home and deliver to your new one when it’s ready.
How is my furniture looked after?
Our crew wraps furniture in blankets, and everything is stored in sealed Jam Pods in our CCTV-monitored, temperature-controlled depot. Protection cover is available.
